Platinum Video is looking for your Snowboard videos for it’s annual film festival. Platinum Video, Canada’s largest Extreme Sports Video distributor and Mont.Tremblant resort are now accepting video submissions for the Third Annual “Adrenaline Film Festival” to be held at the resort Dec 1, 2001. Honda Sponsors Shaun Palmer

Torrance, CA – American Honda announced today that extreme athlete Shaun Palmer, six-time Winter X-Games gold medalist, has entered a unique promotional relationship with Honda’s Motorcycle Division.

Palmer, crowned Action Sports Athlete of the Year at ESPN’s ESPY Awards on Monday, February 12 is hailed by many as the “Extreme King of Extreme Sports”.

He is also an avid motocross rider with a penchant for Honda’s aluminum-framed CR motorcycles.

Under the terms of the agreement, Palmer will promote Honda motorcycles and display Honda logos on his snowboard and gear at the 2001 Winter X-Games. In return, Honda Racing will provide Palmer with a factory-prepped CR motocross bike to compete in Round 1 of the American Motorcyclist Association’s (AMA) Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California on May 13th.

Palmer has won Winter X-Games events in snow boarding, mountain biking, extreme skiing, and wakeboarding. As a motocross racer, “The Palm” qualified for his first AMA 125cc Supercross main event in 1999. “There are a lot of great athletes out there. But all the great athletes are only doing one sport. No one’s trying what I’m trying,” said Palmer. Honda’s association with Palmer is the latest example of a high-profile extreme sports athlete promoting Honda motorcycles.

Newly crowned ASP World Surfing Champion Sunny Garcia is also a member of Honda’s “Extreme Elite” athletes group, riding and promoting Honda CR motocross bikes. Garcia has been riding a Honda CR125R for several years and has even built a Supercross track behind his North Shore house on the Hawaiian coast to incorporate motocross riding into his cross-training program.

SOS Celebrates Service to Underserved Youth

Winter officially ended in mid-March, but a change in activities has always marked the transition in seasons more tangibly than a date on the calendar or even the lengthening hours of sunlight. At the Snowboard Outreach Society (SOS), the graduation of the final group of Learn to Ride (LTR) students on Sunday May 20th defined the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

Although SOS is disappointed to see its busiest season of serving youth has come to a close, the accomplishments of the season elicit pride. SOS has used snowboarding to reach out to over 2,000 underserved and adjudicated youth since 1995, and SOS worked with 521 students in the 2000/2001 season! These students live in urban centers such as Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Portland. In addition, SOS draws over 40% of its students from the local schools in Eagle and Summit Counties. SOS has a strong presence in so many areas of the nation because of its relationships with service-minded people at the following resorts: Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Steamboat Springs, Arapahoe Basin & Eldora in Colorado; Timberline in Oregon; Snoqualmie in Washington; Big Bear & Northstar in California, Brighton & The Canyons in Utah; and Waterville Valley in New Hampshire. SOS also aims to establish relationships with more resorts to further extend its outreach.

The participants in the SOS LTR program receive snowboard clothing, equipment rental, lift tickets and professional instruction for five days. SOS programs go beyond regular snowboard lessons because of an emphasis on developing character and building positive relationships by focusing on core values. Here’s what SOS students had to say:

Squaw Valley Cancels Fireworks Show

[Squaw Valley USA] Due to extremely dry conditions and in the best interest of safety and fire prevention, Squaw Valley USA has canceled their annual Independence Day Fireworks Show at High Camp on Wednesday July 4, 2001.

“We apologize for any inconvenience, as we understand that the upper mountain fireworks show is a summer highlight for many people,” explained Eric Brandt, Squaw Valley Ski Corp. Marketing Director. “Given the current dry conditions we decided that it is in the best interest of our natural environment not to take any chances and we look forward to hosting another great fireworks show next year.”

Although the fireworks have been canceled, Squaw Valley still offers a unique way to celebrate the 4th. The Cable Car and High Camp will be in operation until 9pm. Daily activities at the resort include ice skating, swimming, tennis, hiking, mountain biking, wall climbing, restaurants, bars, spectacular views and the new nightly Star Safaris stargazing programs. Kirkwood Achieves Destination Status

After Seven Years and $100 Million in Resort and Real Estate Development, Kirkwood’s Vision of Becoming a Four-Season Destination is Now a Reality

Kirkwood, Calif.- This winter, less than a decade after Kirkwood Mountain Resort embarked on a mission to transform itself from a day skier’s mountain to a year-round resort community, the resort will celebrate its 30th birthday with a coming of age, just as original founder Bud Klein and his future partners, Telluride Ski & Golf Company (Telski), originally intended.

The concept was simple: to bring a taste of the Rockies to Kirkwood by creating a Mountain Village at the base of the slopes with full amenities to serve both destination visitors and the community, much like the famous Telluride Ski Resort in Colorado. Even today, no comparable village exists in the Sierra.

The key to Kirkwood was having the ability to build a Mountain Village at the base of several lifts plus expand its lift-served terrain by 100 percent. The resort had struggled financially for years until Telski recognized the potential to create a premiere regional destination resort and purchased a large interest in Kirkwood in 1994, giving the resort the funds necessary to proceed with development.

“Two things appealed to me about Kirkwood right away. One, the mountain itself is simply excellent. Having a great mountain is the key element to having a great resort. Two, because of Kirkwood’s isolated location, there is a unique opportunity to do a real ski village, a real destination resort, like we do in Colorado,” said Ron Allred, president of Telski (San Francisco Examiner, 9/26/95).

Kirkwood has done just that, never looking back since construction of The Lodge at Kirkwood began in 1994. Building by building, the Village began to come to life with completion of The Lodge’s 19 ski-in/ski-out condominiums, Lost Cabin’s 16 town homes, and the West’s first quarter-ownership residence club at a ski resort, The Mountain Club, all connected by the Village Plaza containing numerous shops and restaurants.

In addition Kirkwood built a multi-million dollar children’s ski and daycare center and two new restaurants offering family-style and fine dining at the base. On the mountain they installed a snowmaking system, upgraded Chair #6 to the Cornice Express High Speed Quad, upgraded Chair #4 (Sunrise) to a fixed-grip quad and increased capacity by fifty percent on their beginner Chair #9 (Bunny). The Slide Mountain family tubing hill was added in 2001.

As Kirkwood enters its 30th year, they will add the final piece to the destination puzzle by completing the Village Ice Rink at plaza’s edge, phase one of a fitness and swim complex, Snowcrest Lodge and Meadowstone Lodge, adding 54 luxury slopeside residences. Since the opening of The Lodge, over 200 residences have been built on or near the slopes.

“Kirkwood has the potential most areas envy but only a few areas have,” said Ron Allred (San Francisco Chronicle, 9/24/94). “Having now spent time in Kirkwood, we are even more convinced of its potential to become a premiere North American destination resort” (Santa Cruz Sentinel 11/16/95).

“For the first time since the resort’s inception in 1972 Kirkwood can now call itself a ‘Destination Resort’ credibly because it has all the fundamentals in place that, by anyone’s measures, define a destination. Employees, investors, guests and especially community members have been anxiously awaiting this day,” said Tim Cohee, resort president.

“It will be exciting to complete the picture,” said Klein, Kirkwood’s 68-year-old founder. “Before I die, I want to see the painting.” (Modesto Bee 1/30/96)

Kirkwood is eternally grateful to all of the homeowners who took a chance, buying into the resort in the early years, when there wasn’t much in the Valley but a day lodge, a few chairlifts and a strip of condominiums. Kirkwood didn’t come close to the Hollywood glamorized Vail or Aspen, and it took a certain type of person to give it the benefit of the doubt. The risk paid off once news of the Telluride acquisition hit the media and Kirkwood’s property values skyrocketed, setting off a feeding frenzy as Northern Californians slurped up what they hoped could be a taste of Telluride in their own backyard.

“I bought into Kirkwood in 1989 with the expectation that it would develop into a “European Style” Alpine Village. I am very pleased with the progress Kirkwood Mountain Resort, along with the input from the community, has made toward achieving this,” said East Meadows Homeowner Rich Williams, MD. “The development I have observed during my years of ownership has been tasteful and has been done on a scale appropriate for the Kirkwood Valley.”

“Kirkwood has been passed down through three generations in my family. My parents took a big gamble buying a home here back in 1972 but they realized it was a special place and would always remain so,” said Lodge Homeowner Diane Alexander. “Now I own a place at the Lodge and I share my love for Kirkwood with my own children. While my family enjoys all of the new activities that the resort’s development has provided, we still get that intimate relationship with the environment up here that you can no longer find in Tahoe.”

Prominent Stockton businessmen, headed by Bud Klein, founded Kirkwood in 1972 with an approved Master Plan for resort development, consistent with the Specific Plan which is in place today.

In 1995 the Telluride Group with Charles E Cobb, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Arvida/Disney Corporation, purchased a significant interest in Kirkwood. Bud Klein, Kirkwood’s original developer and largest shareholder remained a major investor. In 1997 Ron Allred and Jim Wells of the Telluride Group sold their shares to Cobb and in 2000 the resort’s current development group was formed. Throughout the ownership changes development has continued according to plan.

Firm To Build Indoor Snow Sports Facility

SnowMagic Entertainment Industries Continues to Revolutionize the Snow Sport Industry by Using its Patented Technology to Build the First Multi-Activity Indoor Snow Sports Facility in US

Mount Everest Snowboard Controversy Solved

In a wave of controversy, two Europeans recently laid down the first snowboard tracks on Mount Everest. Duotone rider Stephan Gatt and Elan teamrider Marco Siffredi completed the task within just two days of each other. Because the riders were within such a close time period, each company is staking rights on the title for the first snowboard descent. However, the details of their expeditions show both are entitled a variation of the claim for slightly different reasons.

On the morning of May 22, 2001 Stefan Gatt climbed the 29,035 ft/8,850 m summit of Mount Everest without the use of oxygen and carrying all of his own equipment. After riding from the top to a height of 8,630 meters and accessing the Norton Coloir descent route, Gatt opted to climb down the ascent route. He stated the snow looked hard and therefore not very fun to ride. The snow was better at 7,600m, and from that height he rode down to 6,450m.

Two days after Gatt’s epic turns, Elan snowboarder Marco Siffredi reached the summit at six in the morning alone. However unlike Gatt, Siffredi had Sherpas carry his snowboarding equipment and climbed with the aid of oxygen. After locking into his bindings at the top, Siffredi went for it, and began his descent down the Norton Coloir North Face. Just 200 meters below the summit (near the same altitude that Gatt opted to climb for a while) Siffredi’s binding broke due to the extreme cold (-35 C). After a Sherpa came to his aid and fixed the binding with a tool kit, Siffredi continued with what became an approximately two-hour descent. The ride was completed from 8,848m to 6,400m, without the use ropes or rappels.

So, in reality both riders completed the task of laying down the first snowboard tracks on Mount Everest. However, breaking it down, technically Gatt was the first snowboarder to lay any tracks on the mountain. Plus he receives extra points for completing the task carrying all his own equipment and without the use of oxygen. Therefore, his accomplishment should be called the First-Ever Attempted Descent. Keeping this in mind, Elan rider Marcos Siffredi did do a longer, complete descent of Mount Everest, so he could be crowned with the First-Ever Complete Descent. Essentially, they both deserve credit … they are definitely the only two people who can claim they’ve snowboarded on the tallest mountain in the world. At least until further notice.

The Crystal Awards® Exhibition

For the first time in public, a selection of images from The Crystal Awards collection will be placed on view at the Crystal-gallery during the infamous inner city contest, freestyle.ch, in Zurich, 19-22 September.

Devised by Dani Kiwi Meier, The Crystal Awards is an elite snow photography competition that emphasises the concept of ‘pure imagery’. During the winters of 1999 and 2000, over twenty of the world’s most eminent snow photographers, including Trevor Graves, Jeff Curtes, Richard Walch, Peter Mathis, Patrick Armbruster & Justin Hostynek, formed two-man teams with some of the greatest names in snowboarding – Andrew Crawford, Daniel Sappa, Josh Dirksen, Dave Downing, David Vincent & Jay Nelson, amongst others.

After shooting up to 100 rolls of film in the designated resort for one week – 1999 St Anton am Arlberg (AUT), 2000 St Moritz-Grabünden (SUI) – the teams viewed their developed content in secrecy. The photographer and athlete had to then carefully select just one image that captured the essence of each pre-determined category, such as Jibbing, Black & White, Landscape & Portrait. The teams themselves, along with industry invitees, sponsors and the online public, judged the submissions at the grand finale – The Awards Ceremony.

Crystal-gallery will expose over 100 Crystal Awards images of 1999/2000, from the winning shots, to nominations, and previously never-seen archive material.
