Track Your Tracks

Sometimes the truth hurts. You think you’re ruling the mountain, then at the end of the day, you check in at the base and receive a detailed topographical map showing your routes, your total vertical feet, top speed, total miles, and elapsed time on the hill.

Vail recently installed the MapTrek Sports Tracker system, a Walkman-sized device you wear while riding that uses Global Positioning System satellites to map your ascents and descents. At the end of the day, just return the SportsTracker to the main office for your 3-D map.

The truth comes out. You spent half the day sitting in the lodge sipping hot chocolate, your top speed was a scant 21 miles an hour, you stuck to the blue runs, and you only did 8,245 vertical feet–over the course of seven hours. The chart shows it clearly and your ego is earnestly deflated.

SportsTracker will be available this season at Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Grand Targhee, Heavenly, and Northstar-at-Tahoe resorts for about twenty dollars a day. For more info, contact MapTrek at (970) 479-8553, or e-mail
