The BBC Group Leaders

Boarding For Breast Cancer (BBC), is a national organization working to elevate awareness among today's youth and raise funds for breast cancer research and educational projects.Through unique, youth-focused programs, BBC is able to convey a relevant message to thousands of people, while raising funds for the cause.

BBC was founded in 1996 as a snowboard and music benefit event, in memory of Monica Steward. Monica, a prominent member of the snowboard community, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28. When diagnosed, Monica committed herself to doing something to raise awareness, build support and find a cure. It was the overwhelming response to Monica's account of her battle with the disease,"Both Feet on the Ground," published in WIG Magazine that sparked the idea of a benefit event. Monica's story made quite an impact, especially among women in their 20's who had no idea they were at risk. Monica passed away at the age of 29, shortly before the inaugural BBC event. Her death was a poignant indication of the need to do more in the fight against breast cancer's fatal grip on American women and those who love them.

Today, BBC runs various educational, fund-raising programs allowing the organization to further its mission and broaden its reach to American youth. BBC's programs include an annual BBC Snowboard + Music Festival, which this year is presented by Polo Sport, a BBC Board/Ski-A-Thon Program, and BBC's Traveling Display.

In 1998, BBC's awareness efforts have included coverage on The Rosie O'Donnell Show, MTV(News and Sports), Much Music, Lifetime TV, and E! TV, as well as inclusion in Swing, Jump, Fit, and Conde Nast Sports For Women. In addition, a print ad campaign placed in Elle, Jump, McCalls, Living Fit, Mamm, Vice, Transworld Snowboarding, Snowboard Life, Warp, Blunt, Electric Ink, and Snoboard reached millions of readers nationwide.

Live national bands that have in the past included The Beastie Boys, Primus, and Luscious Jackson

Over the past three years, BBC's mission to increase awareness, particularly among younger generations and raise money for breast cancer research and education has been a huge success. With tremendous support from the attendees, sponsors, volunteers of BBC's programs and the snowboard and music industries, BBC has raised over $237,000 for the cause. Proceeds have been donated to The Breast Cancer Fund and The Susan G. Komen Foundation, both national non-profits dedicated to doing a better job of detecting, treating, and curing breast cancer through cutting edge research and educational programs. BBC plans to continue seeking beneficiaries that align with the organization's mission, while continuing to develop BBC's own youth-oriented outreach programs.
