Hetzel raced across the finish line in front of France's Laurent Besse (St. Martin, France), Norway's Emst Thue (Hovikeuien, NOR) and Jason Brown (Salt Lake City, Utah) to claim the Boarder X title for the second consecutive year.
��This was a tough battle to the finals,'' said Hetzel. ��The final heat was a rough one. We were pushing and grabbing each other at the start and I was able to break free in front of the pack. After that I never looked back.''
In the women's final, local rider Erin Epperson, 19 years old from Truckee, Calif., came from behind to catch series Boarder X leader, Nillard Pilavakis (Sugarloaf, Maine) in the last 500 yards to capture her first professional Boarder X title. Pilavakis' second place finish secured her Overall Boarder X 1998 ESPN/Airwalk FreeRide Title.
��This feels amazing,'' said Epperson. ��I had a great start and tried to stay as close to Nillard as possible to make a pass.''
��I never even heard her coming,'' said Pilvakis. ��The snow is so quiet, she �snuck-up' on me and passed me on the first knoll before the finish.''
The Slopestyle competition managed to complete the first two rounds of qualifying before organizers had to postpone the finals to Sunday morning due to the severe weather conditions.
