US Open Day Two: Fog City

The second day of the US Open, March 20th, was scheduled for Super G qualifiers and finals, as well has the halfpipe qualifiers. Due to typical eastern weather, the super G was pushed back and pushed back again, giving the riders more things to complain about. Seems that several people were sore after their checks from the American Snowboard Tour had bounced.
Super G qualifications finally happened, but they were so delayed that the finals had to put off until Saturday morning. This looks to throw off the entire Open schedule because Saturday has always been exclusive to the halfpipe. Luckily, the crowd won't have too difficult of a decision to make, because who really wants to watch racing anyway.

The halfpipe qualifiers were set to start later in the day, so they were able to begin close to on time. The sun peeked through, and the day cleared up for the women's runs, and the ladies had lots of good things to say about the halfpipe. The women's runs mostly consisted of 540's and back to back 3's, with the occasional mctwist or 720 thrown in. Fifteen year old Karla Gembrowski showed up all the old ladies by throwing a crippler, which she almost pulled all the way around. Unfortunately she crashed, and didnt make it to the finals.
The men's qualifiers, on the other hand, did not come off so well. After the women, the riders were given an hour of practice, and by around the middle of this snake sesh, the fog had moved back in. The judges could now see about 10 feet past the judging stand, and even announcer Chris Copley had very little to say. While it doesn't usually matter if the judges can see or not, they ended up delaying the first heat's start and allowed more practice. By this point the pipe became completely kinked. This went on until around 5:00 when they closed the pipe for maintenance, which turned into a session of one hitters by Michaelchuck and Haakonson. They finally decided that they were going to wait until night, and have the contest under the lights. At this point, less hardcore people, like myself, left to write about it.

Weather forecast for Saturday looks to be even worse, with up to a foot of snow expected. While powder turns in the halfpipe are always fun, it would probably be better without the snow. Also, seeing as we are in Vermont, it will probably rain anyway. The night qualifiers, which did not happen, will be done in the morning. This will extend the day with almost twice as many runs. It looks to be an exciting day filled with plenty of action for all, if you can see any of it.
