Archibald and Kosglow Take Hunter Mountain GS

The last section of the course was particulary messy. A final knoll launched many right off the course and out of the running.

The opening event of the 1997 American Snowboard Tour got off to a pretty miserable start when the weather at Hunter Mountain, New York decided to jack with competitiors all day long. That didn't slow Jeff Archibald and Lisa Kosglow on their way to winning in the Giant Slalom.

Ogden, Utah's Archibald ignored the rain, fog, and extremely bumpy course and kept his mind on the business at hand. "I think the difference today was that I was able to block out all the obstacles," said Archibald. "I stayed focused all day."

Archibald, turned in a blistering 1:07.67 on his first run, followed by Stratton Mountain students Travis McLain and Peter Thorndike. Luckily, his time held in the second run even though both McLain and Thorndike both had faster second runs.

Riders huddle behind each other to try to stay out of the rain that drowned the course during the afternoon.

On the women's side, Lisa Kosglow, of Boise, Idaho didn't worry about the weather or extremely limted visability either, and walked away with a five second lead over second place finisher Julie Rheaume of  Quebec. "I have a tendancy to race better when the weather is bad and the course is kind of burly," she explained.
