1997 Mammoth Open GS #1: The Kosglow and Archie Show Continues
Okay, the old news is that Lisa Kosglow and Jeff Archibald won another GS. As much as it would be fun to add some drama to the story it really isn't there. Jeff and Lisa rode strong and smooth right into the winner's circle. The real story, however, was that Peter Thorndike came within .17 of a second of taking it and he held on to his Paul Mitchell Riders Cup Leader's Jersey. "I know exactly where I lost it, too," Thorndike said at the bottom of the course. "I stood up a little in the middle of the course and that cost me the win." On the second run in the women's event Melissa Tirpak came within .13 of a second of Lisa's winning time, however, Kosglow still took it by a little over three seconds thanks to her ripping first run. The conditions for the GS were perfect. The snow on Mammoth's Fascination run held up all day. It was dense and cold. There were no ruts and with clear skies and a cool breeze no one had any complaints. "We've been training some really tight rough courses lately," Jeff Archibald said. "And this course was perfect. It was like riding on butter." Lisa Kosglow was happy with it as well. "Mammoth does such a good job of running races," she said. "We should have a lot more races here." There were some disappointments. In the first run both Matt Mitchell and Julie Zell hooked up and blew out of the competition. Competition continues tomorrow with another GS on Fascination and the Halfpipe competition at June Mountain on Sunday, February 8, 1997. Giant Slalom # 1 Results (2-7-97)
