Bud Light U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix Ends With Tight GS Races

Powers, who won the halfpipe title last January at the FIS Grundig World Snowboard Championships in Lienz, Austria, eliminated J.J. Collier (Dillon, Colo.). Dunn, 23, halfpipe champion at the 1994 U.S. Open, defeated Tricia Byrnes (Burlington, Vt.) in the women's final. In the battles for third place, Frederick Sterner of Sweden edged countryman Jonas Gunnarsson, and Kyla Duffy (Rutland, Vt.) beat Tina Basich (Sandy, Utah).

The Grand Prix was created to aid in the selection process for the U.S. snowboarding team, which will compete in the 1998 Winter Games when the sport makes its Olympic debut. The Grand Prix concludes Sunday with men's and women's giant slalom; the next events are Jan. 2-5 at Snowmass, Colo.
