Jacoby Second In World Cup Parallel Slalom Despite German Fog

SATURDAY, FEB. 3, 1996

HINDELANG, Germany -- Fog curtailed some of the World Cup snowboard action Saturday but Mike Jacoby (Hood River, OR) broke up an Austrian logjam at the top of the men's results and still climbed onto the podium.

Fog, which wiped out the men's alpine downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, trimmed the snowboard finals to four riders. Jacoby, the only non-Austrian in the top four, was second in a murky weather, losing to Helmut Pramstaller of Austria in the final run of the dual format race. Manuel Mendoza (Whitefish, MT) and Jeff Greenwood (Granby, CT) were 13th and 14th, respectively.

In the women's parallel slalom, Dorothee Fournier of France edged Austrian Manuela Riegler with Stacia Hookom (Edwards, CO) posting the top American result in fifth place. Lynn Ott (Bend, OR) was 12th.

JACOBY HAS SO-SO DAY BUT RETAINS TOP SPOT IN SNOWBOARDING GS

HINDELANG, Germany -- Reigning World Cup champion (and newly crowned World Championships silver medalist) Mike Jacoby (Hood River, OR) retained his top ranking Sunday in giant slalom in the FIS Grundig Snowboard World Cup tour despite a tough day on the race hill as light snow fell.

Jacoby, who was runnerup in GS to teammate Jeff Greenwood (Granby, CT) at the World Championships a week ago, was second after the first run but was disqualified for missing a gate during his second run. However, with riders dropping one of their results after six events, he continues to hold a 680-point lead.

Harald Walder of Austria won the men's GS in 1:06.71 with Tom Lyman (Whitefish, MT) posting the best U.S. finish, eighth. Greenwood was 13th.

In the women's event, Sondra Van Ert (Ketchum, ID), the only woman to win two medals at the World Snowboard Championships, was second after the first run but ran into problems. Ursula Fingerlos, another Austrian, won in 1:14.51 and Van Ert held onto fifth place with Stacia Hookom (Edwards, CO) eighth.

In Europe for the past month, Coach Peter Foley conceded, "It appears the American team's minds had already left Europe although their bodies were still here. Hopefully the two will eet up to race together in Japan next weekend." Next stop: Feb. 10-12 in Alts, Japan.
