APSS Kirkwood Halfpipe February 11, 1996 Kirkwood, CA Kale Stephens Rules the Kirkwood Half Ditch
Truth be told, using the word "halfpipe" on the morning of the Kirkwood contest was a bit of a stretch. Regardless of the time Frank Wells and Kenyon Robinson put into getting the pipe in shape the morning of the Bud Light Pro Snowboard Tour contest the pipe was little more than a ditch. The first 50 feet were okay and that's where riders like Jamil Kahn and Finland's Joonas Ahlava were ruling all day. But it seems the judges didn't notice. No one was surprised, they'd been experiencing technical difficulties most of the day. During the women's qualifying round one of the judges didn't score anyone. No wonder ISF World Overall Champion Michele Taggart of Salem, Oregon wasn't happy with her score. "They're all screwed up down there," she said as she made her way back to the top of the pipe. Eventually, the judges decided to factor in an average score to all the women's totals to make up for the missing judge. Taggart when on to win the women's event so the judging didn't seem to bother her at the end of the day. During the men's final there really was no excuse for the judging as scores seemed to rise a fall for no particular reason. Taking nothing away from Sims rider Kale Stephens who rode solidly all day, many in the crowd believed Jamil Kahn of Burlington, Vermont should have won. Some even speculated that Kale's high scores had something to do with the fact that Kale's mother was standing at the end of the judges table all day. Oh well. Here are the rest of the results.
