THE PIPE AFTER SCENE
3.23.97

L7 took the stage shortly after the pipe ended...

"I just want to say hi to my Mom," said Terje Haakonsen to the huge audience at the awards ceremony after the halfpipe contest was through. While the contest was over, the festivities for the evening were just beginning. Kick-ass girl rocker band L7 revved up their amps and began banging away, providing some awesome late-afternoon entertainment for the masses.

Meanwhile, underneath Mulligan's bar and restaurant Nitro and Tommy Hilfiger hosted a private party for the press, riders, and those lucky few who finagled invites to the catered and liquored ordeal. It was in the Green Room, a little alcove located below the restaurant. The music was loud, the food was good, but the crowd was thick and the smoke was even thicker. Retreat was necessary.

...The fans launched multiple snowballs stageward...

Back outside a large audience had gathered in the courtyard at the base of the mountain in front of the Stratton Village Inn. Stickers, goggles, an old, wet sock, and various other goodies were being thrown from the rooms above. One pro put on a good show like he was going to throw his Burton Haak pro model out the window, drawing a huge crowd of onlookers begging him to do it, but it never happened.

The bass from L7 reverberated throughout the courtyard as snow started falling pretty hard. The band lasted three more songs before a snowball hit the lead singer and pissed her off. "You guys are all fucking rich jocks," she said in her raspy, distinctive voice that has made L7 a hit. Another snowball was launched onto the stage and the bassist said, "Kill that fucking guy, kill the rich jock."

...And L7 left the stage shortly after the set started.

The snowballs didn't stop and so the band decided Stratton wasn't worth their good tunes and they set their guitars down, exiting stage left. Sadly that was it for L7.

Incidentally, last year's band The Pharcyde, also used what the East Coast gentry called "foul language" forcing Stratton Mountain to send out apologies to all their season pass holders. It was rumored that this year Burton's contract with L7 specifically called for no foul language. Damn, those girls are naughty. ( Check Out the Rest of the After Pipe Party Action )
