Van Ert, Jacoby Sweep Snowboard GS On Olympic Hill In Nagano

SATURDAY, Feb. 10, 1996

NAGANO, Japan -- World Cup leader Mike Jacoby (Hood River, OR) fattened his points leader Saturday by winning another World Cup snowboard event while Sondra Van Ert (Ketchum, ID) earned the first World Cup Gs win for a U.S. woman.

Von Ert, who won two medals at the recent FIS World Championships, won both runs for a total two-tun time of 1:47.53, a winning margin of 3.51 seconds. Lynn Ott (Bend, OR) was fourth.

"Sondra really put two together," said Coach Peter Foley. "This is the first time we've won a women's World Cup and she did it convincingly. She won both runs and every intermediate time."

Foley also saluted Ott, calling her finish "an amazing result ... She works really hard and made a big jump this week."

In the men's GS, Jacoby surged on the second run, jumping from third place to first. His winning tom was 1:40.64 with Denmark's Mike Kildevaeld and Bill Enos -- who both live in Waterville Valley, N.H. -- second and third. Kildevaeld was second with a time of 1:42.33 and Enos took third, the first podium of his career, with a time of 1:42.44.

"Jacoby had a great run as he was in third after the first run behind [Austrian Peter] Pechhacker and [Holland's Thedo] Remmelink. He ran right on the pole every turn and rode very clean, winning the second run by almost two seconds. 'Kildy' trains and travels fulltime with us," Foley said, "so we consider him a part of the team."
