ORANGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 1997--Vans, Inc. (Nasdaq:VANS) sponsored the First Vans World Championship of Snowboarding in Lake Tahoe, Nevada last week.

More than 300 of the world's top male and female athletes from over 25 countries competed in five events including: Half-Pipe, Bordercross, Big Air, Duel Slalom and Giant Slalom for a total purse of $154,000. The competition was held February 24 - March 2, 1997.

"The enthusiasm from both the participants and spectators made this event an overwhelming success for Vans," stated Gary H. Schoenfeld, Chief Executive Officer. "Not only did we strengthen our brand recognition among the world's top snowboarding athletes, we will also be able to increase our visibility through national television coverage of the event.
