Entry One: A Slave To The Games |
Back To The Winter X Games Index |
| Okay, here's the deal. Through a rather stange string of events I've
become what is known in the TV industry as "talent," on snowboard shows for
ESPN. That doesn't mean I'm talented, it simply means that I'm one of the
guys who rambles incessently while snowboarders jump, sprock, carve, and
huck their way down the mountain on those made for TV competition shows.
I know, so what, big deal.
Anyway, someone at ESPN decided that I should be one of the talent people for the inagural Winter X Games at Snow Summit January 29 through February 2. I have a feeling my being chosen has more to do with Plow Magazine editor Greg Tomlinson than anything I did. As producer Tim Scanlon said, "GT spoke very highly of you." Thanks GT, love ya babe. As a result I'll be spending the next week sitting in front of a TV monitor with headphones on pretending to be Al Micheals, or maybe John Madden. I use the word pretend, because what else can I do when I've got Conrad the producer talking to me in one ear, snowboarders hucking for more cash than they've ever seen, and former Olympic Gold Medalist (and star of the cult BMX movie 'Rad') Bart Connors sitting next to me asking what the judges are going to think about that rider who just spun like a dead head on crack off the Winter X Games Big Air kicker? I pretend. And since I'm going to be here anyway, I thought it might be fun to keep a rolling record of what it's like behind the scenes at what will be the biggest event snowboarding has ever seen. And don't say the Olypmics will be bigger. The producer of the X Games boarderX is going to use 18 cameras to get all the action. So while their lining up the cameras, setting the lights, and pushing the action, I'll be taking notes, pictures, and as much free stuff as I can find. Then, each night, I'll kick down a little of the days happenings. Check back and you'll see what I mean. - Lee
