New Dates and Venue for Westbeach Classic

By Press Release

April 4, 2000

Whistler, BC - March 1, 2000. The Westbeach Classic, the final event of the four stop Kokanee Snowboard Canada Jam Tour has moved to an all new date: May 19 - 22 ("Victoria Day" Long Weekend) at Whistler Mountain, BC.

The new date coincides with a new direction from Westbeach and Whistler/Blackcomb to take advantage of the Whistler's epic, late season spring snow conditions. "Whistler has the best spring snow conditions in the world," enthused Peter Young, Whistler/Blackcomb's Events Manager. "Not only do we still have a huge snow base, but we enjoy some of our best weather of the year in May - lots of sunny days combined with warm spring temperatures It's one of the favourite times of the year to ride for locals!"

For Westbeach, the May timing also signifies the seasonal transition between its two core sports activities: snowboarding and skateboarding. "It's the best time of year to bring together snowboarders for one big season ending event, and gather skateboarders to kick-off the summer season" said Todd Freisen, Director of Westbeach Retail. "We plan to make skateboarding a bigger part of Westbeach Classic for this year.

The Classic will return to its roots at Whistler Mountain with the entire event taking place at the top of the mountain (at or above the Roundhouse Lodge), including Pro Big Air, Pro-Am Halfpipe Jam, Pontiac Amateur Slopestyle, Industry Demos in the Motorola Boarder's Village, Live Entertainment, and Parties.

For 2000, the Big Air event will include an expanded entry field, and the Halfpipe will feature a "Super Dragon" pipe. Prize money will be $10,000 minimum for Halfpipe and $5,000 minimum for Big Air.

The Kokanee Snowboard Canada Jam Tour is Canada's largest national snowboard tour, featuring $145,000 cash and $100,000 in prizes, and including Cdn Big Air Championship, ISF World Tour Halfpipe, Pontiac Amateur Slopestyle events, Motorola Boarder's Village, Free Demos, Live Bands, and Parties. Sponsored by Kokanee Beer, Snowboard Canada Magazine, Pontiac, Motorola, Nintendo and Westbeach.
