Emery and Brun Kjeldaas Win Leysin Pipe By Press Release January 21, 2001
Sun., Jan.21, 2001, Leysin/SUI. Local Jonas Emery (SUI/Rossignol) and women's halfpipe serial-winner Stine Brun Kjeldaas (NOR/Duotone) win the Halfpipe competition. As in yesterday's PGS, a full swiss podium at the Mens with current World Rank leader Gian Simmen (Blue Win) and Dani Costandache (O'Neill) coming in second and third. Suomi rider Minna Hesso (Salomon) as second and swiss girl Fabienne Reuteler (Ydoiride) complete the women's podium.
It was a perfect day for the pipe-competition: Blue sky, warm temperatures and more than 1000 cheering specatators along the 4,5 meters high and 140 meters long superpipe and in the event-village ensured the special flair of this classic tourstop in Leysin.
The riders, all pretty hyped up from the crowd were giving it back by going big and high. And it was a local to win! Jonas Emery, recently more doing Big Air competitions than Halfpipes, won with a stunning second run, featuring clean FS 900 and switch 720 Haakon Flips ahead of the current leader in the Motorola ISF Championship rankings, Gian Simmen.
"I'm stoked! Last season I won the Toyota Big Air Competition in Sapporo and proved to be a good straight-jumper. I did not do a lot of piperiding or training during summer, but at my first Halfpipe-competition in Laax (where he ended up 4th!!) I got into it again. I learned three new tricks during practise and qualification here and now I won this big event so close to home. Today I finally could prove to be a good piprider as well", Emery stated with a wink of an eye.
Stine Brun Kjeldaas, 1999/2000 Motorola ISF World Champion and by far leader of this season's rankings (up to now, she won every single competition she entered this season!) again showed a nice run in the finals, featuring a clean 720 and a 540 mellon: "Technically, the other two girls on the podium are on the same level as I am, and from what I saw during practice, Minna (Hesso) could have beaten me today if she would have had a clean run. I charged hard and had to risk a lot, but it fortunately worked out. I guess I was just that little higher than the others", she stated.
The Motorola ISF Tour is now leaving Switzerland and will come back with the Snowboardcross competition in Oberstdorf/GER with 100.000 US$ of prize money on Jan. 31st.
