Hurley International announced that the 10th annual H2O Winter Classic is set to take place February 8-10, 2002, with a $15,000 prize purse. Hurley, along with DVS Shoe Company, will once again present the annual surf/snowboard event, due to the overwhelming success of last year�s event. �We�re proud to be involved, once again, with the H2O Winter Classic�, Says Paul Gomez, Head of Marketing for Hurley, �This is the only event that we feel captures the true meaning of the board sports lifestyle.�
The 2002 H2O Winter Classic will kick off Friday, February 8th with a concert, with details to follow as available. Performers from past years include Pennywise, Face to Face, Unwritten Law, Jimmy Eat World, Kottonmouth Kings, and Blink 182. The surf contest will take place February 9th at the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, CA, and the snowboarding competition will take place February 10th at Mountain High Winter Resort in Wrightwood, CA.
The H2O Winter Classic presents a unique opportunity for professionals, amateurs, and board sports industry leaders to compete in a weekend of surfing and snowboarding, each in their own divisions. Pro snowboarder, Dave Downing, states, �I like that everyone just hangs out and has fun. I also like that we get to surf and snowboard in the same weekend.� Past competitors include Terje Haakonsen, Jamie Lynn, C.J. Hobgood, Shane Beschen, and Keith Malloy.
�I started the H2O Winter Classic as a way to give back to the industry and the sports I love,� says Vipe Desai, the event�s founder. �The fact that the event has received so much support from the athletes and industry is really rewarding.� Desai began the event ten years ago when he owned the H2O Surf and Snowboard shop in Sunset Beach, CA. The contest has since become a template for the proliferation of events that marry boards sports and music in a festival-like atmosphere.
