SOL | One Step Beyond: 1998's Best Step-In Bindings (Device)

Device Step-In Review:
by Mark North
Device's Argon Linerless Freeride boot ($199) is lightweight with ample support for freeriding. Stiffeners integrated into the boot keep the design simple--no ratchets, no straps--just a set of laces, like the simplest traditional soft-boots.
The flexible sole makes the Argon a prime choice for hiking and sessioning kickers.
For those who prefer a liner in their freeride boot, check out the Device Mercury or Krypton (Device's stiffest boot). For a more flex, try on Device's Lithium Freestyle.
A recessed bar at the toe and a stud behind the heel anchor the boot to Device's Electron binding ($149) and help channel leg energy directly to the edges of the board, thanks to the toe-heel contact points. With a traditional highback and full-size baseplate, the Electron looks just like a regular binding, minus the straps.
One drawback: limited forward lean adjustment (Device's Proton model offers a wider range of micro-adjustable forward lean). Available with 4X4 or 3D compatibility.
