SOL | One Step Beyond: 1998's Best Step-In Bindings (Switch)

Switch Step-In Review:
by Mark North
Switch's Axel Pro boot ($249) fits cozy and snug, with absolutely zero heel-lift. Internal Velcro straps, external laces, and ratcheting ankle strap offer a range of support from kinda flexy to downright rigid. Forward lean comes from an internal highback controlled by a ratcheting strap that crisscrosses the rider's calf.
Like most step-in boots, it's heavy, and the sole is stiffer than you might like (you need that for quick response, though, with most of the sole in direct contact with the board).
If the Axel, or Switch's Gomez (freeride) and Valencia (freestyle) don't suit your liking, no worries--Switch offers the widest range of compatible step-in boots, through licensing agreements with Raichle, Nice, Niedecker, Exo, Gordo, Heelside, Vans, Fila, Flexible, and Northwave.
The Autolock 750 ($199) features 4X4 and 3D compatibility in a lightweight binding with a new Narrow Bale configuration that makes it easier to step-in.
