| The 1st Annual Boarding for Breast Cancer (BBC) event took place at Sierra
at Tahoe last Saturday, April 13, 1996. The event was a rocking success raising
$50,000 for Breast Cancer Research. The event concept was created by W.I.G.
Magazine and Lisa Hudson of Twist. BBC was developed and produced by Fuse
Sports Marketing.
The day featured something for everyone. Free lessons and demo product, a professional Half-pipe Demonstration, a Big Air Demo/Contest with winners Jennie Waara of Sweden, and Shenandoah Sampson of Truckee California, receiving Trek 930 SHX Mountain Bikes. The music scene featured performances by Spent Idols, M.I.R.V., Tilt, and special guests, The Beastie Boys playing under the name Quasar. The event's proceeds were donated to The Breast Cancer Fund, a national non-profit organization that raises awareness and funding for cutting-edge projects and research programs. Product auctions and raffles of hundreds of items donated by over 50 manufacturers/distributors continued throughout the day. The first annual event was a total success with 75% of gross proceeds going directly to the fund. Sierra at Tahoe, the mountain hosting BBC was wonderful to work with accommodating every request. Over 30 volunteers donated their time to assist in running the event that drew over 5600 people. Boarder Built's, Rob Guistina created a safe and challenging Half-pipe and Big Air jump for over 100 professional riders, and announcers John Logic and Mark Fawcett kept the crowd entertained.
