Boarding For Breast Cancer |
|
| "Boarding for Breast Cancer" (BBC) is a one-day event to raise money
and awareness in the snowboarding industry for breast cancer research. The
idea for the BBC came about after W.I.G. Magazine ran a story by Bonfire
clothing designer Monica Steward, called, "Both Feet on the Ground"--an account
of her own battle with breast cancer at the age of 27. Monica's words proved
shocking, yet inspiring. Letters and phone calls to W.I.G. indicated that
many women in their 20's never knew they were at risk. But breast cancer
is the most commonly detected cancer in American women today and is the leading
cause of cancer death for women ages 15 to 54.
Unfortunately for Monica, any help her event could have provided to cure her own cancer, came too late. She died January 8, 1996. But her spirit lives on through the men and women she's affected and the event she helped launch: The BBC on April 13, 1996 at Sierra-at-Tahoe, California, has become a snowboarding Lollapalooza. Performances by top bands will coincide with a big-air contest and halfpipe exhibitions with Tina Basich and Shannon Dunn. An all-day auction of snowboarding equipment and clothing from sponsoring snowboard companies will help raise money for the Breast Cancer Fund, while educational booths from sponsors such as Patagonia, Rock for Choice, The Breast Cancer Fund, Rock the Vote, and the Surfrider Foundation complete the circus atmosphere at the base of the mountain. Money from sponsors and a percentage of Sierra-at-Tahoe's ticket sales (the lift tickets you purchase that day) go directly to support the Breast Cancer Fund. "We need to make this happen," said Monica during one of our last conversations. For her and many other women and men, it's happening.
