Boarding For Breast Cancer Raised $55,000 For Education And Research

An occasional rain shower was not enough to dampen spirits at the 2nd Annual Boarding for Breast Cancer at Sierra at Tahoe Saturday April 19, 1997. Presented by Burton Snowboards, the event educated and entertained over 4000 snowboarders and concert goers.

BBC founders and event producers Fuse Sports Marketing, W.I.G. (Women In General) Magazine and Lisa Hudson credit the event's success to the enormous support by Sierra at Tahoe, industry sponsors, riders, and volunteers nationwide. Additional funds were raised through ticket sales and an on-site raffle & product sale. Proceeds were donated to The Breast Cancer Fund, a national non-profit organization that raises awareness and funding for cutting-edge projects and research programs.

Snowboarding exhibitions in big air and halfpipe took place during the day. Nationally known riders like Tina Basich, Noah Brandon, Joe Curtes, Shannon Dunn, Satu Jarvela, Wendy Powell, and Michelle Taggart contributed to the cause by donating their time, talent and registration fees. The following top riders received recognition and commemorative plaques:

Pro halfpipe Cara-Beth Burnside (Burton, Volcom, Arnette) and Jimi Scott (Ice Age) Pro big air Katrina Warnick (Burton, Salty Peaks) and Eric Klassen (Rossi, IBEX, Reef,Wave Rave Shop,Arnette) Am big air Michelle Shetler (Joyride, Minx/WaveRave, Arnette) and Sean Tedore (Forum, Airwalk)

Demo snowboards were available through SIA and 15 event sponsors had display booths at the event.

Breast Cancer education was facilitated through "The BBC Scavenger Hunt." The Hunt led hundreds of participants to education booths provided by The Breast Cancer Fund and W.I.G. Magazine and to an inspiring breast cancer photo exhibit (Phases I-IV) created by Susan Izzo.

Live music from Angelface, That Dog, and 7 Year Bitch energized the crowd in the early afternoon. Then in the rain, Primus stepped up and stoked out a crowd of several thousand. In the evening, Luscious Jackson headed to the South Lake Tahoe bar Mulligan's to play for a packed-in crowd of 800 BBC ticket holders.

On-site media coverage included American Journal, Lifetime, MTV Sports & News, and Wasatch Films (producing the official BBC half-hour documentary video). Attending snowboard media included Snowboarder, SnoBoard, Heckler, Electric Ink, Snowboard Canada, Snowboarding On Line, Transworld, and W.I.G. magazines.
