After raising over $50,000 for The Breast Cancer Fund in 1996, Boarding for
Breast Cancer has established itself as a premier, youth-focused snowboarding
and music festival. Last season's inaugural benefit event had over 6,000
spectators attend to see top American professional riders and top national
bands including Tilt, Spent Idols, m.i.r.v.e. and the Beastie Boys (Quasar).
The 1997 Boarding for Breast Cancer (BBC) on Saturday, April 19 at
Sierra-at-Tahoe is expected to reach maximum capacity in both numbers and
enthusiasm. Top riders like Joe Curtes, Tina Basich, Michelle Taggart, and
Wendy Powell will be on-site to support the cause and to throw down cutting
edge maneuvers in the pro halfpipe and big-air exhibitions. Also this year,
the event will include an amateur jam session, product giveaways, and celebrity
appearances.
Free demos will take place throughout the day, along with a massive fundraising
raffle and auction of over 100 snowboards, clothing, and accessories provided
by snowboard companies and the SIA snowboard festival.
Musical acts tentatively scheduled for the event include Luscious Jackson,
Primus, The Line, and Angelface. Outdoor concerts mixed with the awe-inspiring
spectacle of some of the best-known riders make BBC an entertainment event
not to be missed.
Festival arena tickets are priced with or without resort lift access and
will be sold on a first-come basis (tentatively) through Bass Ticket Outlets
1-800-225-BASS.
Event History: When Monica Steward of Bonfire Snowboard Clothing was diagnosed
with Breast Cancer at the age of 26, a distant threat suddenly became a
devastating reality. As part of her healing, Monica committed herself to
doing something to raise awareness, build support and find a cure. Among
the many friends who supported Monica's cause, friends at Twist Snowboard
Clothing, WIG Magazine, and Fuse Sports Marketing worked to create BBC to
benefit The Breast Cancer Fund, a national non-profit organization dedicated
to doing a better job of detecting, treating, and curing breast cancer through
cutting-edge research and education programs. Monica's death shortly before
the inaugural BBC was a poignant indication of the need to do more in the
fight against breast cancer's fatal grip on American women and those who
loved them.
Planned attending media include SOL | Snowboarding Online, Snowboarding Magazine
Snowboarder Magazine, Stick, W.I.G., Fresh and Tasty and all regional
snowboarding magazines. PSAs have been posted in several national and regional
publications.
Anticipated TV exposure includes MTV, STV and a made-for-TV production.
Boarding for Breast Cancer's 1997 fundraising goal is $100,000 for The Breast
Cancer Fund. BBC depends on sponsor donations, ticket sales, raffle and auction,
volunteer help, and donations. Thank you.
