Blunt Magazine Premieres The Warriors

Boarding For Breast Cancer 1996

September 11, 1996

Irvine, CA

The boys from Dickhouse publishing (the people responsible for Blunt and Big Brother Magazines) chose the heart of Orange County to premiere the new Whitey Video, "The Warriors."

And from what we've heard, The
Warriors was pretty good, also.

I'll just say right up front that we didn't get to see, "The Warriors." We drove all the way up to Irvine, hung out at the pool tables, munched on free goodies, and danced to some pulsing techno, but for reasons that will become apparent, we missed the show.

The crowd at Metropolis was a mix of next wave snowboarders, old-school industry, and UC Irvine students. Metropolis was hosting some rare underground club as well so by 10:00 the place was packed and a line of vinyl skirted girls and rumpled skate punks lined up 200 deep in front of the club.

Inside, and off to one side of the dance floor was a sushi bar where many of the snowboard players were hanging out early on. The Joyride crew was in full effect including Jamie Briggs, Jason Kanes, Ken Greengard, Keith Wilson, Rob Ripley, and Bill Keller. And the rest of the crowd looked something like this: Van's Paul Durante and Ann Miller, Jared and Andy from Medium Magazine, photographer Rob Mathis, Todd Proffit, Silence Team manager Romey Thornton, Raul Ries from Special Blend, Type A's Carl Hindman, Joyride teamrider Jason Murphy, Duotone rider Tommy Tominen, Evol's Derrick Swinford, George Covalla of Snowboarder Magazine, and a bunch of people that none of us knew. I saw one guy kind of wandering around looking lost and it turned out to be Big Brother's Rick Kosick. We'd didn't exchange pleasantries.

After being at Metropolis for nearly three hours and snapping a few shots, we finally threw in the towel on "The Warriors" and drove home. Only the tenacious party people know what the video was actually like. From what we've heard "The Warriors" is pretty good. We're still hoping to see it someday.
