Mammoth Mountain Partners With Gotcha Glacier

By Sean O'Brien

April 6, 2000

The Glacier of Anaheim announced today that it had signed a management agreement with Mammoth Mountain Ski Area for all snow related operations at The Gotcha Glacier in Anaheim, California -- which will be Americas first indoor snowboard and surf park when it opens in 2002.

Mammoth's future So Cal home?
When completed, the Glacier will house a snowboard halfpipe, surf and skate park, North Americas largest climbing wall, indoor skydiving, bowling alley, scuba diving, and more than 190,000 square feet of entertainment, retail, and restaurant space. With these additions, the projected budget on the facility has ballooned from the 40-million dollars estimated seven years ago to the 130-million smackers projected today.

As part of the agreement, Mammoth Mountain will report to facility manager Ogden Entertainment and will be responsible for snowmaking, grooming, terrain park, ski and snowboard rentals, repairs, and lesson operation.

Mammoth Mountain is the natural choice to oversee snow operations, says Glacier Vice President Michael Gerard. Ive been in the industry for 22 years and have consulted in Japan and in New Zealand and I can tell you they are the best operation in the business.

Mammoth is also planning to lease 2,671 square feet of retail space inside the Glacier facility that will house a retail shop bearing the Mammoth Mountain logo, a facility-wide photography service, travel office, and retail store.

Mammoth will also serve as the official patrol service inside the Glacier, says Gerard. So when you blow that air to fakie youll take a Mammoth Mountain toboggan down to the University of California, Irvine-staffed infirmary.

As the date of the Glaciers official groundbreaking draws near, Kajima Corporation (the project management company overseeing construction) has guaranteed that it will be completed on-time and on or under the 130-million dollar projected budget. Turner Construction will be the general contractor.

The Gotcha Glacier will be located adjacent to Edison International Field of Anaheim and just down the road from the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim and Disneyland Park.
