The Return of Board AID

February 9, 2000

It is estimated that 40,000 Americans are infected with HIV each year; half of new HIV infections are among young people under the age of 25.

In the U.S., more people kill themselves than are killed by other people.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among people ages fifteen to 24.

Every day 1,234 kids run away from home. One in seven kids will run away.

Five-thousand homeless or runaway youths will die this year from assault, illness, or suicide.

Alcohol use is the number one drug problem among young people.

During a typical weekend, an average of one teenager dies each hour in a car crash. Nearly 50 percent of those crashes involve alcohol.

Statistics provided by LIFEbeat, American Association of Pediatrics: www.aap.org; National Runaway Switchboard: 1-800-621-4000, www.nrscrisisline.org; and MADD: www.madd.org

Board AID is the original board sports charity event. Since its inception in 1994 Board AID has raised 696,000 dollars, which was granted through LIFEbeat to organizations that provide prevention, education, and/or direct services to adolescents affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS.

Board AID combines, skateboarding, snowboarding, and big-name musical guests in a carnival-like atmosphere. Tony Hawk, Andy Macdonald, Bob Burnquist, and Brian Patch are among the many professional skateboarders who have been on hand for the vert demos at each event. Snowboarders Peter Line, Daniel Franck, Bjorn Leines, Nicola Thost, and Travis Parker have participated in the big-air and halfpipe demos. The Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, Bad Religion, Sublime, Tribe Called Quest, and Wyclef Jean and The Refugee Allstars have graced Board AID’s stages.

Board AID went global in 1997 and the Board AID Europe events in Andermatt, Switzerland have been a huge success hosting an international lineup of athletes and bands such as Run DMC.

The American event went on tour for 1999 joining the SnoCore event, with a dollar from ever ticket sold being donated back to Board AID.

This year, Board AID will go back to the slopes in not one but two locations. Board AID will take place March 10—12 at Bear Mountain Resort, Big Bear Lake, California, and at a resort yet to be named in Colorado April 7—9. Tina Basich and skaters Andy Macdonald and Mike Vallely are the spokespersons for Board AID 2000.
