Q&A;: What's the Last Piece of Good Advice You Got October 1, 2001 Whats the last piece of good advice you received?
Good advice can be hard to take. The other day I was at the grocery storein a big hurry, seeand I noticed the loudspeaker announcing something about a car in the parking lot. I ignored the announcement like I ignore everything that doesnt immediately have to do with me. But when I inadvertently heard the words "silver Audi," I got to thinkinghey, I have a silver Audi. Then came the clincher"Colorado plates." My brain labored in slow motion to fathom the odds of such a coincidence. Was there someone else whod also recently moved from the Rockies and had been equally irresponsible to the DMV about getting new California plates? No, there was really no denying it: I was the culprit. All right. Drop the mustard. Walk out quicklybut not so quickly that people know youre the idiot.
When I got outside, I found that my car had rolled backward and was now blocking one of the driving lanes in the lot. There she sat, gleaming in the bright sunshine, with a little crowd of puzzled Albertsons employees forming on one side. I guess Id forgotten to put my parking brake on. "I guess you forgot to put your parking brake on," said an observant member of the crowd. And thats when an immaculately tanned woman in her forties bestowed on me the earth-shattering advice that couldve prevented the whole tragic incident: "You should be more careful," she said. "You couldve really hurt someone."
I am trying to be more careful, but theres still a lot more good advice out there to be had. Hear it from the mouths of the pros.J.S.

"When I was a child in school, I asked my teacher, What should I try? Should I paint pictures? Should I sing songs? This was her replyQue ser, ser, whatever will be, will be. The futures not ours to see. Que ser, ser."

"The best piece of advice Ive ever gotten was that everyone goes through similar experiences in their snowboarding careers. Like with injurieseveryone gets injured and has that downtime. Everyone has that time when theyre excelling and doing well, and theres never a set order of what comes when. Especially when youre going through difficult times with injuries, youve got to remember that youre not the only one this has ever happened to. And your career is long-term; snowboarding is a long-term thing."

"Great spirits have always encountered violent oppositions from mediocre minds.Albert Einstein, given to me by Sue Izzo."

"Therefore be clear-minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides. This came from the Bible[1 Peter 4:7-9, 11]."
