Q&A; January 7, 2002 Like macaroni at the bottom of the strainer, music has a way of getting permanently caught in memories. The Pixies Surfer Rosa album, for instance, will forever encapsulate the fall of my sophomore year in high school. And I know a guy who can't listen to Jawbreaker's "I Kissed A Bottle" without thinking of the first time his heart was brutally ripped from his chest cavity. Keeping this in mind, we asked four pros what song would embody the memory of each of them as a person-you know, the song that would be cranking at their funeral-and here's what they had to say.-J.S.
What song would you like played at your funeral? Marcus Egge Age: 28 Sponsors: Elevation, Smith, DVS "I don't know. If there were a song called, 'Shit, I'm super pissed I'm not hanging with you guys anymore, and I wish I wouldn't have had the airplane salmon,' I would probably play that one. But since I don't think we could get the rights for it, I would say some bluesy Beck ... off the Mutations album. I'll let my boys pick."
Chauncey Tanton Age: 24 Sponsors: Oakley "It would either be 'Who Let The Dogs Out,' because this dawg is out, or 'Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys,' because I always wanted to be remembered as a cowboy."
Jason McAlister Age: 25 Sponsors: Salomon, Bonfire, Gravis, Version "I'm actually not planning to have a funeral because I'm going to be cremated instead. I want all my friends and family to have a party for me with my ashes and pictures of some cool thing I did up on the mantel for them to remember me by. And I like the easy sounds of Jack Johnson, so his self-titled album would be playing the whole time. Funerals are horrible times for a lot of people-I just want all my friends to get together and have a good time with a keg of beer and some good food."
Erik Leines Age: 22 Sponsors: Ride, Oakley, Nixon, Volcom, Vans, Gravis, Active Ride Shop "I'd probably want a song by the Doors titled "Riders On The Storm." Basically, I want people to go to my funeral and hear music that gets them excited and feeling good. I think this song would do that and might make my friends and family think about me 'riding the ultimate storm.' If people can get somewhat pumped at my funeral, that's all that matters."
