Four Pros-One CD

November 1, 1998

Featured this month: UNKLE Psyence Fiction

The UNKLE project is Mo Wax founder James Lavelle and DJ Shadow collaborating with Mike D, DJ Krush, Money Mark, Metallica's Jason Newstead, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, and The Verve's Richard Ashcroft.

Blaise Rosenthal: "To start with, I've never heard of UNKLE, so I had no idea what I was going to listen to. The first song is sort of a psychedelic techno hip-hop thing that actually sounds pretty good. The following songs are, as the press release states, " ... as diverse as the artists themselves." Each of the tracks does have a mellow, techy, spacey feel, which connects them all together. As a whole, I think the music on the CD is pretty good."

Travis Parker: "Very up-to-date. Good, wholesome Generation X party music, with a hint of acid ... or ecstasy. This CD also brings across the dark side of society today mixed in with some sexy flavor. Experience it. It puts you in that ‘techno' state of mind, but it's not too techno. I'm getting deep ... drunk on an airplane to NYC."

Brodi Dowell: "My first impression of this CD was Cure meets Front 242. As far as anything else goes, thanks for the disc. I'll listen to it the next time I'm playing Internet games with my chat-group bros.

Dave Sypniewski: "I wasn't quite sure how to review this CD. I didn't have an urban-beats dictionary to translate the song list. So my untrained ear had to listen to mad mixes all blind and shit, yo. My mom once told me that if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all. Signed, a kid who skates to the Nuge."
