Michael Shelley Too Many Movies Big Deal

New York singer/songwriter/guitarist Michael Shelley has been compared to pop-savant Jonathan Richman (the balladeer in There's Something About Mary), but that's a little unfair: yeah, Shelley's got some silly-sweet songs full of wry observations, but he's also got a history of collaboration with a wide variety of other artists, most recently members of high-cred Scottish band Belle & Sebastian and a project called Cheeky Monkey with Teenage Fanclub/BMX Bandits' Francis Macdonald. A follow-up to Shelley's first LP, Half Empty, Too Many Movies holds a wide variety of pop gems: PMS tolerance anthem "Baby's In A Bad Mood," country-tinged "Lisa Marie," the destined-for-prom-night Hammond-heavy "Sweet Little One," Dixieland instrumental "Sluggo," and the folk-rock "Jigsaw Girl." Shelley claims that after years in and out of bar bands, he finally decided to get serious about songwriting. Luckily for us, he's damn good at it.
