I first met Risto on a spring day at Big White in 1992, and being a fifteen-year-old grom I could only marvel at my luck, riding a chair with a local legend. Unknown to the rest of the world, Risto has been silently ruling in Kelowna for a long time, and the first thing I noticed was his humility. You see, Risto has the courage to be warm in a world that prefers you be cool.

Our friendship began on that day of riding the slough, and since then I've watched him bust onto the snowboard scene with guns blazing. Over the last couple of years in Whistler, Risto has become a lot of things to a lot of people: a golden boy to his sponsors, a freestyle Yoda to young Jedis like Jesse Fulton and Brad Baxter, a feared adversary to competitors, and a source of encouragement to everyone he meets. With M3 in our midst, don't be surprised if Risto is sitting beside you on the next lift up.
