5/14/99
Preview
Last summer at Mt Hood the IJC held its inaugural judges clinicÖthe first of four worldwide snowboard clinicís which where the template of the training and educational process for pro snowboard judges around the world. Thanks to the IJC membership and their belief in what we are accomplishing for the riders and judges, the IJC trained and certified 107 judges from 25 countries. By using the same educational process and the same testing procedures (a snowboarding first) worldwide, the IJC has enhanced the process by which we train and educate judges. This has had positive results in the level of professionalism we strive to attain as well as fostering good relations with the riders we serve. All the judges need to be commended for their hard work as well as the many organizations who support the IJC. This years camp will be even better and includes: five clinic days including pro judges section, head judges and trainers section, a fifty/fifty split of time on snow and class sessions, the use of Windellís snowboard camp, a tough new exam, new certification and test results completed at the clinic, credentials awarded at the clinic, a new TS section for freestyle, the new updated freestyle manual and best of allÖlodging closer to Government Camp.
IJC-NA 99 Clinic Goals
The judging clinic will have four distinct areas of involvement and will all center around the freestyle disciplines of straight airs, quarterpipes, slopestyle and halfpipes. We will start from the beginning with the straight airs, progress to the quarterpipe then slopestyle and finally the halfpipe. The emphasis will be on judging skills...trick identification, difficulty and execution and the placement within the judging range of scores. To do this a judge has to be comfortable with judging all phases of a run in the halfpipe or any trick off a straight air jump, as the judge needs to be well grounded in the basic mechanics of the individual maneuver. In addition, there will be an emphasis placed on the formats that are found at the various contests offered by different organizations as well as those advocated by the IJC. The four areas of concentration for the clinic is as follows:
1. Training for designated North American judges who hold the Pro Judge I and II and III level of certification and who will be judging extensively in NA and internationally will again be certified through a testing process and will view a new video, discuss new maneuvers, and share insights with riders on what is taking place in the course of a halfpipe event and where the difficulty in progression in the halfpipe and individual trick assimilation in straight airs and quarterpipes. This section is a focused element for the best NA-IJC judges to determine what and how things need to be judged. This section will be led by Greg Johnson, Tom Wagener, Jason Grossi and Jay Moore.
2. Specific instructor training for the development of IJC instructors to train Regional and National judges. Descriptions of the difficulty of various maneuvers as well as the basics of judging will be covered. Also included will be an interpretation of judges responsibilities, a description of contest situations and actual halfpipe judging. Judges will be assigned to take part in this activity and will be given instructor supplies for the continuation of their work. This section will be led by Tom Wagener, Jason Grossi and Jay Moore.
3. IJC Head Judge training which will consist of an overview of practice day before the contest and checklist of requirements of straight airs, halfpipes, judges stand, supplies and contest personnel. Day of contest duties for judges and Head Judges in training, scoring, and assisting the TS. Discussion of running of the halfpipe contest. Closure of the contest including review of judging by both official judges. Maintenance of halfpipe as final item. This section will be led by Greg Johnson and Tom Wagener
4. TS trainingÖTechnical Supervising of the snowboard freestyle site will be covered in detail with particular emphasis on competition organization, liaison work with various work groups (sanctioning bodies, promoters, mountain crew, race departments), safety issues and media concerns will also be covered. This session is by invitation only and is only open to Head Judges who hold HJ Pro Judge II and III certification as well as 5 years of International and Pro experience. This section will be led by Greg Johnson and Tom Wagener
