PR: Second Stop Of The Vans/G-Shock Triple Crown Of Snowboarding

Set To Hit The Slopes Sierra At Tahoe.
February 11, 1999

Santa Fe Springs, CA Vans, Inc., the premier Southern California-based core sports and lifestyle brand, is ready to launch the second stop of the inaugural Vans/G-Shock Triple Crown of Snowboarding - the G-Shock North American Championships, on March 3-7, 1999 at Sierra at Tahoe, California.

Competition will be fierce at the G-Shock North American Championships as a world-class field of athletes such as the Mountain Dew Classic halfpipe champion Todd Richards, Chad Oterstrom, Tina Dixon, Nillard Pilivakis, and a host of Tahoe locals will compete in the halfpipe, big-air, and snowboard cross events for $125,000 in prize money.

"After the incredibly successful Mountain Dew Classic in Breckenridge, we're excited about moving the series forward to Sierra at Tahoe" says Steve Van Doren, Vans vice-president of promotions. "The athletes were stoked, the mountain staff was energetic, the sponsors were pumped, and it showed. We hope to carry this momentum throughout the rest of the Triple Crown Series."

In addition to all the action on the hill, event sponsors Vans, G-Shock, Mountain Dew, Switch Bindings, Sierra at Tahoe, and "Ravenous" by 20th Century Fox will host a number of apres-board festivities for athletes and VIP's. Further details will be distributed during the event.

The G-Shock North American Championships at Sierra at Tahoe is one of fifteen events in the Vans Triple Crown Series, composed of Triple Crowns of Snowboarding, Skateboarding, Surfing, Wakeboarding, and Freestyle Motocross. Each stop of the Vans Triple Crown Series receives a dedicated one-hour show, airing a minimum of three times on the ESPN networks in over 180 countries to over 200 million households worldwide. This is the largest television distribution package ever featuring these core sports. The airing dates for the G-Shock North American Championships will be announced shortly.

With features like 2,212 feet of vertical, over 2,000 acres of varied terrain, ten lifts (including three express quads), and over 480 inches of average annual snowfall, Sierra at Tahoe acts as a perfect location for an event of this caliber. Ride the Nob Hill chair to witness the best snowboarders in the world compete in the halfpipe, snowboard cross, and big-air disciplines at Sierra at Tahoe.

Malibu, California-based LXD, Inc., a full-service sports promotion and event production company, will serve as event promoter and executive producer of the television programs for the 1999 G-Shock North American Championships.

Following this event, the Vans/G-Shock Triple Crown of Snowboarding wraps up the season in Saas Fee, Switzerland on March 23-27 for the Vans Championships.

Vans has been a leader in core sports and lifestyle footwear for over 30 years, long before skateboarding, snowboarding, and other board sports made it to television. Vans has quickly become a leader in the expanding snowboard boot market and has recently acquired Switch step-in bindings. Additionally, Vans has added a line of apparel for both street and snowboarding. Vans collections are sold in the United States through a network of independent retail stores including skate, surf and snow shops, specialty athletic and lifestyle retailers as well as through 106 company-owned stores and factory outlets. Vans also sells to 80 countries internationally through distributors, sales agents and its subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.
