MODART 98

San Diego, CA- On September 10, 1998, the enormous Culy Trucking Building will be transformed into a fusion of culture, fashion, art, and music for the first annual Modart bash. Over 100 well-known artists, DJs, fashion designers, musicians, and related companies are coming together to celebrate the city and raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad.

The event, which will be located in the historic Gaslamp district in downtown San Diego, will include exhibitions by painters, sculptors, filmmakers, photographers, graffiti and performance artists involved in youth and underground popular culture. Opening day of the Action Sport Retailer show, held at the convention center, falls on the same day as the event-enabling all the artist and participating companies to be in one place at one time.

The evening will begin with an artist reception at 8pm, including many renowned action sports athletes/artist such as skateboarders Natas Kaupas, Lance Mountain and Chris Miller and snowboarders Jamie Lynn, Mike Parillo, and Bryan Iguchi, as well as many others. Additionally, students from Fashion Careers of California College will be showing their clothing creations on live mannequins.

The fashion show, featuring designs from companies throughout the United States, will commence at 10pm. The runway will be filled with the newest lines from such companies as Planet Earth, Redsand, Hapa, Ton Clothing, Volcom and many more.

Thee Ideal Burlesque Revue will provide a side show at midnight to top of the evening with three live acts. See an archaeologist discover Cleopatra in her tomb, and learn what a woman-with-man-head is.

Event coordinators Mona Mukherjea of Transworld Media, Jessica Geddes of Thee Ideal, and Shaney Jo Darden of Hapa organized Modart 98 in order to integrate the many forms of underground creativity into one accessible outlet and simply "to entertain". Admission is $10 at the door for those 21-and-over with valid ID, 8pm-2am, at 338 7th Ave., San Diego.
