Newry, ME � Sunday River opened for the 2000/2001 ski and snowboard season Thursday, November 16, 2000 at 12:00 p.m. The arrival of colder weather and favorable snowmaking temperatures allowed the resort to open the T-2 trail on Locke Mountain, and set the stage for a major expansion in open terrain for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Traditionally the first resort in Maine to open for the season, Sunday River began making snow at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, for a two-day span of over 24 hours of continuous snowmaking. With favorable long-range temperatures, Sunday River will continue to make snow around the clock.

"Thanks to the best snowmakers and most powerful snowmaking system in New England, Sunday River will have terrain open for all ability levels for the Thanksgiving holiday," said Chip Seamans, Sunday River�s Managing Director. "We�re proud to be the first resort in Maine to open for the ski and snowboard season once again."

Sunday River is guaranteeing top-to-bottom skiing and riding on a variety of terrain for all ability levels by Thanksgiving. With the largest and most technically advanced snowmaking system in the East, at more than 1,500 snowguns, Sunday River can make more snow faster than any other resort in the east.

For Thursday, the Locke Mountain Triple will serve the T-2 trail for advanced skiing and riding only, with all skier and rider services, including lift tickets, rentals and food service, offered at the Barker Base Lodge. Looking ahead to the weekend, Sunday River will open the Barker high speed quad and Ecstasy trail-- bringing the total to two trails and two lifts.

The resort added 30 tower snowguns this season to the White Heat trail, site of World Cup mogul events at the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Grand National in January 2001. Also new at Sunday River this season are a double diamond glade trail in Jordan Bowl called "Wizard�s Gulch," a 500-foot in-ground competition halfpipe in Barker Basin and an expanded lighted tubing park at Nite Cap Fun Center.
