Boarding For Breast Cancer (BBC), the national snowboard / music benefit
dedicated to raising awareness among American youth and funds for breast
cancer research and education, today announced the Foo Fighters, Moby,
Royal
Crown Revue and Supersuckers to perform at the 3rd annual event taking
place
on April 18th at Sierra-At-Tahoe, CA.
Launched in 1996, BBC combines snowboard exhibitions by the world's top
professional snowboarders, breast cancer awareness programs, and national
music acts, which in the past two years have included the Beastie Boys,
Primus, and Luscious Jackson, for a festival blow-out. In two years,
through the generous support of individuals, snowboard industry companies,
the music industry, and major corporations, BBC has been able to educate
American youth on breast cancer issues while raising over $125,000 for the
cause.
Boarding For Breast Cancer was inspired by Monica Steward, a leading
snowboard clothing designer. Diagnosed with breast cancer at age 28,
Monica
dedicated herself to raising awareness of the disease among young people,
and building support for research and education in the snowboarding
industry.
"Losing Monica made a lot of us realize that life is about much more than
how often you go snowboarding. Monica was beautiful, young, and vibrant.
Boarding For Breast Cancer honors her strength and reminds us all how
important our lives are and how important it is for all of us to support
the
organizations that are working to find a cure for breast cancer," says
Abby
Guyer of Saloman/Bonfire. Saloman/Bonfire has joined Convert, Vans,
Alloy,
twsnow.com, Mountain Dew, JNCO, Visa, and Sims as Supporting Sponsors.
Burton Snowboards has returned for the second year as the event's
Presenting
Sponsor and Kodak is supporting BBC as Title Sponsor.
In the effort to expand Boarding For Breast Cancer across the nation
through
regional fundraiser events, the inaugural BBC Board-A-Thon (BBCB) will
launch at Stratton Mountain, VT, on March 28, 1998. Participants will
collect pledges for their day on the slopes and incentive prizes,
including
lift tickets and snowboard product, will be awarded to the top
fundraisers.
Stratton plans to match the funds raised dollar for dollar. All proceeds
will be donated to The Breast Cancer Fund and The Susan G. Komen
Foundation,
two national and local breast cancer research and education organizations.
Events and activities including a barbecue, a pro halfpipe jam, live
music,
and a breast cancer awareness exhibit will take place throughout the day.
