What can you do with 18 straight days of perfectly blue skies at Mt. Hood.
Well, the pros just found out. Since we've been at Hood for what seems like
forever we'd like to share a little of the info we procured. It goes something
like this:
- Gold Medal Swing Dancer -
Todd Richards, the 1997 US Open ruler, was hanging around Hood last
week sporting the new urban heroine chic look with his the sharp jaw line,
khakis, white muscle shirt, and a gel rock-a-billy do. The new Details Todd
makes us wonder when the tats will start showing up on his arms. Todd didn't
hit the mountain up too much and spent a lot of last week skating the High
Cascades street course. Was he on the "over it" mode or was the call of Urban
Outfitters in Portland stronger than desire to ride pipe? He did make it
up one night for an after hours shoot so keep an eye out for photos from
that.
- Bump N Wood -
Also working on a new look this month is Travis Wood, he's been changing
the color of his hair as regularly as he changes his underwear (probably
more). Wood lurked around the Hood area for a few weeks riding and interviewing
pros for Blunt Magazine.
For those of you who haven't
heard, Blunt is now owned by Larry Flynt Publications, the proud owner
of Hustler and the latest porn sensation Rage. Travis said
the buy out has been great, it allows him to write snowboard pieces for porn
mags and porn pieces for snowboard mags. Recently he was working on an interview
with porn star Chasey Lain. She apparently liked Travis' last name
and got even more excited when he suggested she meet his friend Jason
Bump. Her manager starting talking about what a great movie they could
make called "Bump N' Wood." Oh, yeah.
And in cleaner fashion news, the ever virginal Noah Brandon got rid
of the green and has been doing the summer thing. He spent a few weeks at
the Craig Kelly Camp at Whistler and now he's pipe slutting at Hood.
Speaking of Whistler, Canadian Derek Heidt was at Hood and riding
strong for the ever present string of cameras pipe side at the camps.

Artie Krehbiel and his tattoo directing Jason
Ford for an upcoming Salomon movie. |
- The Ink Spots -
Cinematographer Artie Krehbiel from FLF Films has a new tattoo
that is represenative of his film career, next week he's getting color in
it. Erik Leines' ex-girlfriend just got a tattoo near the bottom of
her spine. How do we know? She showed us. Of course we saw Artie's new ink
every morning when he crawled out of his closet at the
Salomon
house and started bossing everyone around.
I'm a solvan. Dah Dah da da. |
|
- The SOL Van -
Campers and drivers on Oregon highways have been treated to the newest addition
to the Windell's Snowboard Camp bus fleet. That's right, it's the
SOL Van spreading the world to the unbelievers. So far the van has been seen
by close to 200,000 people and that number is growing everyday. Now, if we
can just get them to remember what they saw.
- Girlcicles (Girls on Sticks) -
Christine Sperber has been riding hard these days and is reportedly
back from brief retirement as a pro. Leslee Olson is riding better
than ever. She has been wowing photographers and filmers with huge methods,
3's, and 5's. This week the spotlight might get stolen by
Nitro's
Nicola Thost who just rolled into town and is ready to show the world
that she wants the gold. Tina Basich has been training hard and is
looking stronger than she ever has. Shannon Dunn just made it to Hood
too and was throwing some good pipe at Mt. Hood Snowboard Camp along
with Tina.
We ju080>We just wanted to run another picture of
Victoria. |
|
Victoria Jealouse and Cara Beth Burnside have been seen at
the pipe a few times over the last few weeks. Apparently CB is residing in
the Hood area for the summer and is skating Windell's newly bowled in ramp
in preparation for the girls skate jam taking place in San Diego in September.
Victoria on the other hand opted to just be a visitor in the Hood area this
summer.
- Boy Oh Boy -
Tahoe boys Jimmy Halopoff and Kevin Jones have been back and
forth between Hood and Tahoe all summer. The two claim they are going to
be coming on strong next winter as they battle one another for big air titles.
Joe Curtes recently rolled into town in his swanky, black, tinted
windows, big wheels, bad-ass truck complete with motocross cycle in the back.
Jim Rippey sporting a rental dually (six wheel truck) with is motorcycle
in back arrived at Hood just in time for a day at Waschougal track outside
of Vancouver, Washington.
Oakley
team manager Joe Dorazzio rented the place for pro snowboarders to
play in on Saturday, July 26th. They'll be sticking around until the
Morrow
Motocross August 9th.

Bjorn Leines got knocked the f*#k out! |
The Leines brothers are here, performing one of the most spectacular
one-up-man-ship shows around. The other day in an attempt to catch with his
little bro's insanely huge McTwists and spins, Bjorn Leines was setting
up for a Haakenfloppen and in the set up he drilled his tail staight into
a kink in the transition. His tail went all the way up to his boot it body
whipped him right into the bottom of the pipe, knocking himself out cold.
Ski patrol held him down as he struggled to get up in a semi-conscious state.
The amnesia reportedly lasted the rest of the day.
The slippery dog Daniel Franck just swung into town last night, along
with the rest of the pro world. Barrett Christy, Andy Hetzel,
Peter Line, Jamil Khan, and John Sommers. The
Burton
house has been crowded this month: Joe Curtes, Shane Charlebois,
Derek Heidt, JJ Thomas, and Ian Spiro are among the
many Burton team that have been around this month.
Blair Rusin's new skin art. |
|
Burton
rider Blair Rusin finally made it to Hood this summer after his surf
accident last month in SoCal. Blair, who has been living in the 714 area
code this summer, was surfing with visiting teammates John Summers and Jamil
Khan and as he was riding a wave in he got smashed on some rocks. Apparently
his fin dug into his leg slashing it from knee to groin and air rescue was
required. Blair was up riding last week, but taking it easy.
- Zee Product Test -
The
Salomon
team North America and Europe is in town with the boot and binding development
crew testing new product. Word on the product: love the bindings, hate the
boots. Former
Airwalk
team manager Ben Pruess is now working with
Bonfire/Salomon
in the team managing department. New to the Salomon team this month is Finland's
Mina Hesso, formerly of Duotone.
Sponsorship switching is happening like crazy as pros are being dropped like
flies during a cold snap. Adam Merriman was seen riding a Rift
Board. Rift is a new Northwest Company owned by Wake Tech
wakeboards. Jennie Waara appears to be going all
Ride
after being dropped by
Airwalk
boots and
Tuesday/Twist
closing its doors. Ross Peterson is riding for Helly Hansen after
Stryke quit making snowboard clothes. Matt Donahue was on a
Salomon
board last week, as was Lael Gregory. Former Option rider
Natasza Zurek was sporting head to toe
Burton
gear, but says she hasn't signed anything yet. And that's about all for now.
Stay tunes for another installment of Fast Times At Hood High soon.
