Heavenly Opens First in West

10/22/98

MESSAGES: Heavenly Valley Gets the West Going. So when are you going up for the first time?

Lake Tahoe, CA-- Heavenly Ski Area opened for the season Sunday, October 19, 1998, boasting the second earliest opening in the Sierra Nevada region's history.

About 90 eager snow sliders showed up to cruise Patsy's run, which covers over 1,200 feet of trail and is served by the Heavenly Aerial Tram. Patsyšs is on California side of Heavenly, which straddles the statešs border with Nevada.

Temperatures finally plummeted last Wednesday, opening the door way the West Coast's largest snow-making system to fire up its snow guns. Heavenly began making snow on Thursday evening, blanketing trails with six to 24 inches of man-made snow.

"Thanks to our snowmaking system and lots of overtime and hard work by our snowmaking crews, we are extremely proud to be the first resort in California open this year," said Dennis Harmon, Heavenly's Managing Director. "We had an all-time record season last year and this year is shaping up to be just as exciting."

Early season skiers can take advantage of Heavenly's specially reduced lift tickets, which are $12 for adults and $7.50 for children 12-and-under. The Tram is also open for sightseeing for the same prices. Resort officials estimated that a couple hundred sightseers rode the Tram on opening day to catch a glimpse of the snow.

Sunday's surprise opening was Heavenly's earliest opening ever, and resort officials anticipate that Heavenly is off to a record breaking season. Last year, the resort saw record snows and stayed open well into May.
