Coca Cola Sign On For Goodwill Games

By Press Release

December 22, 1999

ATLANTA--Dec. 22, 1999--The Coca-Cola Company has joined Chevy Truck, Circuit City, Gillette, INVESCO Mutual Funds and AIM Distributors, Inc. 1999, Isuzu, Johnson & Johnson, Lincoln Financial Group, PowerBar and Quizno's as a sponsor of the first-ever Winter Goodwill Games, to be held in Lake Placid, New York from February 17-20, 2000 (Opening Celebration on the 16th). With this addition, the Goodwill Games have achieved their goal of signing 10 national charter sponsors. Sponsor information will be incorporated into commercial spots, a national print campaign and on-site signage in Lake Placid.

The campaign highlights the Games' 10 sponsors; six of the elite athletes who will be competing in the Games; and Olympic champion Dan Jansen, who will be a commentator for TNT. The Winter Goodwill Games, with 16 hours of coverage to air on TNT, will feature 11 winter sports: alpine skiing, bobsled, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, luge, nordic combined, short-track speedskating, skeleton, ski jumping and snowboarding.

Commercial spots began airing the first week of December on the various Turner Broadcasting portfolio of networks and will continue through the Games. A comprehensive print and outdoor campaign will accompany the broadcast promotion. National print placements will appear in Time Inc. publications including People and Sports Illustrated, as well as newspapers and outdoor billboards in 11 key markets: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Detroit, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. Additionally, Time Warner Cable affiliates across the country will be involved in national promotions leading up to the Games. The total value of the advertising campaign exceeds $10 million.

Tickets for the 11-sport event range in price from $5 to $46. Approximately 150,000 tickets will be available for sale for the five-day period of the Games. Tickets can be purchased by visiting or calling the Olympic Center Box Office, at 518.523.3330; through Ticketmaster(R), at (518).476-1000 or (802).862-5300; and via the Internet, at www.goodwillgames.com or www.tickets.com. Tickets are also available through all usual ORDA ticket outlets.

The Goodwill Games were founded by Time Warner Inc. Vice Chairman R.E. Turner in 1986 to ensure that the world's best athletes have the opportunity to compete in world class competition. The four previous Goodwill Games have alternated between the United States and Russia; however, future Games will be staged in countries around the world in both winter and summer formats. In addition to the Winter Goodwill Games, plans are underway for the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. TNT is the host network for both events. Goodwill Games, Inc., is a division of Turner Sports, the sports programming and production business unit of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.
