Giant Slalom Postponed Due To High Winds
THURSDAY, March 28, 1996
JUNE MOUNTAIN, Calif. -- High, sustained winds of 60 miles per hour forced
officials to postpone the giant slalom competition at the X-NIX U.S. Snowboard
Championships on Thursday.
Race organizers were able to stage the first run of competition for both
men and women, but were forced to postpone the second run due to high winds,
which at times gusted up to 72 MPH. The giant slalom second run will be held
Friday morning, with women running at 9:00 am Pacific Standard Time and men
running at 9:45. The women's halfpipe competition, originally scheduled for
Friday, will begin at 1:00 pm Friday.
After the first run of giant slalom, Mike Kildevaeld of Denmark leads the
men's field, while Sondra Van Ert (Ketchum, ID) is the first-run women's
leader. Van Ert had an extraordinary first run, placing her in tenth-place
within the men's field.
