U.S. Wins Second Straight Nations Cup; Powers Wins Halfpipe Title

SUNDAY, March 17, 1996

MT. BACHELOR, OR -- "I'm totally psyched," said Peter Foley, U.S. Snowboard Team head coach, as he accepted the U.S. Snowboard Team's second straight FIS World Cup Nations Cup trophy on Sunday at the World Cup finals at Mt. Bachelor, OR. The Nations Cup title is indicative of overall team supremacy on the World Cup tour.

As the FIS Snowboard World Cup finals concluded at Mt. Bachelor on Sunday with the men and women's halfpipe event, U.S. riders collected more of the coveted World Cup crystal globes, as Ross Powers (South Londonderry, VT) also won his first FIS World Cup halfpipe title.

"Today was pretty stressful," said Powers, the reigning world halfpipe champion, who led the World Cup halfpipe standings coming into the finals with teammates Dan Smith (Evergreen, CO) and Rob Kingwill (Jackson, WY) close behind. "There were three of us who were really close [in the standings], and the title could have gone to any of us...and today I just got lucky."

U.S. riders swept first through fifth places in the final World Cup halfpipe standings, with Kingwill placing second, Smith third, Lael Gregory (Bend, OR) fourth and Zach Horwitz (Aspen, CO) fifth. Kingwill won Sunday's halfpipe competition, with Powers finishing second and Horwitz third. Griselda Gonzalez (Salt Lake City, UT) was the top U.S. rider in the women's field, finishing fifth.

"Today was a really good day," said Kingwill. "I really like a flat-bottom pipe, like the one here at Mt. Bachelor. It really gives you a chance to set up and enjoy each air...and set up for the next trick -- I really enjoyed it."

The 1995-96 Grundig FIS Snowboard World Cup tour concluded on Sunday. The U.S. team will now prepare for the U.S. Snowboard Championships, March 26-30 at June Mountain, CA.
