Primary skills used
on different types of terrain can affect your riding.

As we all know, the overall skills are stance and
balance. Stance and balance are always present. Along with these
two things are 3 primary skills called rotary, edge and pressure.

Use of Rotary:
When are rider is in the bumps the most dominant skill is rotary
because you have to turn fast. The bumps cause you to drive your
hip through the bumps. Edge and pressure are still used in the bumps,
but rotary is the most dominant movement due to the fast turns.
Use of Pressure:
In powder the most dominant skill is pressure, because you must
put pressure on the board and then release the pressure to get it
to rise out of the snow. Because powder can be 4 to 8 feet deep,
there isvery little use of edge. Rotary is still used because you
have to turn. With pressure you have to get on it, up and un-weight,
and then down weight on your new edge.
Use of Edge:
The most dominant skill in racing is edge because you have to turn
around the gate. It's true that you have to pressure your edge to
hold it and you have to turn, but the most dominant element is edge.
Edge is also used on the groomed terrain, but all skills will need
to be blended evenly.
Remember that different terrain will dictate which
skill is more dominant.
