SUP surf boards
A SUP surf board chooses based on his frame, his level, his style of surf (aggressive or cool) and the type of waves that we are going to meet Stand Up Paddle Boards. There are also those that take into account the size of their garage or their car...
Our application "What SUP surf choose" takes into account these parameters. The idea of this article is to give outline and highlight some features and their impact to understand the selections and evaluations of our application. The purpose is voluntarily ultra simplified and is not intended for advanced level riders.
The great families of surf SUP
Short SUP - SUP typed shortboard
Appearance: Front end and sharp; rear end and narrow
Top: in waves that grow a minimum
Interest: have a hyper-reactive SUP for radical maneuvers
Disadvantage: in general, little inertia and lots of row which requires good placement for surf and the technique to pick up speed in soft waves.
For: students with a good level in surf capbable generate maneuvering speed
Walk: little interest ca lack of snow and does not advance right
Examples: bonz 8'6 x 29.5 for 116 litres; Naish hokua 9'0 x28.5 for 125 litres...
Compact SUP - SUP type Fish, active or hybrid
Appearance: Compact Board rather short and wide. Before round or round-pointed
Top: in the small waves to medium; short wave and the chaotic conditions
Advantage: playful, easy and handy Board. good recovery in soft waves.
Disadvantage: often poorly adapted to the big waves
For: practitioners of all levels (this is the best choice for beginners)
Trip: OK if enough length for the size of the rower - in general it's comfortable even if it might miss a little bit of snow.
Examples: naish mana 9'5 x 31.5 "to 190 litres, scout bic 9'4 x 30 to 150 litres...
Long SUP - SUP typed longboard
Appearance: a round nose on a relatively long and narrow Board with a very straight outline
Top: in small waves. soft waves or long waves
Advantage: making waves very easy (can run the Board from far away, even on the shoulders); good snow; easy to switch between the soft sections; nose riding
Disadvantage: technique to rotate. cumbersome length in the choppy waters.
For: practitioners of all levels seeking a sliding type longboard
Trip: OK - very good gliding in general.
Examples: bic ace tec 9'6 x 28 "to 130 litres, nalu 10'6 x 30" for 160 litres, bonz 10'2 x 30 "
Below are a few remarks on the main features of the boards (volume, length and width). There are additional info in our article on the boards shape that identifies the vocabulary used to describe the design of a SUP (template, rocker, tail,...)
The volume
Volume too: snowboarding is cumbersome in surf. There is a risk of being wrong. It may be appropriate if you are looking for above all a ride Board.
Not enough volume: oar is physical and technical. It takes a good surfing experience to move and catch waves. It may be suitable if you like technical boards.
The volume for your template and level assessment is indicated on test sheets in the sidebar 'test and notice'
Width
Too wide: it's super stable but the plank can be cumbersome in surf and difficult to rotate (this requires to move his feet to bring closer them to rails).
Not enough width: balance is a problem. and splash yet in the water - at this rate, you will not take a lot of waves...
The length
Long (more than 10 feet to a Medium stencil): in general, it gives the sliding which allows to go very far on all waves. This type of Board need to know to move forward / back to take speed / turn... It is suitable for a longboard to the cool style. It is technical in hollow waves, short wave and water starts or length can become cumbersome. The trap is then finished: the front of the Board plant in the water is the fall.
Short (-8' 5 for a Medium stencil): short boards generally develop many row and are therefore a very good technique to advance about right. Like a shortboard surfing, good placement is imperative to catch waves. It's completely unsuitable for beginners. And if it was for ca enters the clio, buy rather roof bars!
