Killington Resort First Open For The New Season

Telluride Growing Up: Lift Service To 12,735
Feet

Night Time is the Right Time
KILLINGTON, Vt. Oct. 4, 1996--Killington Resort became the first area to open in the country today for skiing and snowboarding.

Today also marked the 36th consecutive year that Killington opened first in the East. Skiers and snowboarders cranked out their first turns atop 4,241-foot Killington Peak at 8 a.m., after less than a four month hiatus from snow since the resort closed for the season June 10.

Killington's high-elevation, which attracts cooler temperatures early in the season, coupled with Killington's powerful snowmaking system, enabled snowmakers to lay down a blanket of snow last night and early this morning. Upper Cascade trail on Killington Peak offers a half-mile of the white stuff to die-hards chomping at the bit to cash in on their first tracks of the season. Skiing and riding is on advanced-level terrain and serviced by Killington double chairlift and mid-station.

All American Skiing Co. resorts have been making snow as well here in the East, gearing up for what promises to be a spectacular season. However, thanks to all the key components of weather and technology, Killington was able to once again begin its season first.

The new season marked the 11th straight October opening at Killington, the ultimate mountain resort. In the 33 seasons Killington has had snowmaking capabilities, it has been the first to open nationally in 30 of those seasons.

While the resort has a tradition of making snow whenever temperatures permit, weather conditions may not allow skiing and riding beyond today. Skiers and snowboarders are urged to call the snow report at 802/422-3261.

Killington, which can cover more than 65 percent of its terrain with machine-made snow, expects to have skiing and riding available for all ability levels by mid-November. Five of its six mountains and all 23 lifts, including the Skyeship, the world's fastest first heated eight passenger lift, plus two new high speed quads, should be open Christmas week.
