Mt. Baker Sees Serious Snowfall
(December 28, 1996)

Letter From Little Cottonwood Canyon (12-17-96)
Pocono Mountains Kick Into Gear (12-17-96)
Snow is nothing unusual at Mt. Baker and Christmas weekend was no exception. After three fairly dry years at the notoriously snowy resort, over two feet fell in 48 hours. This deep snow fall led to interesting events.

On Saturday morning a school bus filled with kids pulled up under the eaves of the upper lodge near the ticket counter. As the kids piled out, a loud rumbling was heard above them, and before anyone had time to scatter, the bus and kids were buried by a slide from the roof. Fortunately plenty of ski patrol and people were on hand to dig kids out.

"I found a kid buried like two feet under the snow. He was all huddled up. He'd been there for about two minutes," said part-time SOL Photographer Jimmy Clarke who was on hand to help with the rescue. The entire crisis passed in less than ten minutes and was without fatality. The only lost item was Jimmy's credit card. "It must have fallen out of my pocket when I was digging or maybe I threw it," he said.

The intense amount of snow that contributed to the roof slide did provide more than enough snow to cover all tracks from the previous day though. And apparently Sunday was no different, however few were able to experience it.

Somehow early in the morning a rumor circulated in Baker that the road and the resort were closed. The truth of the matter was that local snow plows had been taken down to Bellingham to help out there and so the highway department posted a sign saying the road was closed. The resort finally shut down by 11:30, but not before eight paying customers and a few locals who dared brave the windy road to the mountain got a morning of perfect runs. Who needs a heli when there is Baker and days like this?
