STRENGTH - February '98

(February 24, 1998)

This issue reminded me that Strength Magazine is one of the few good thing to come out of Ohio since Devo left Kent State. Publisher Christian Strike has done an amazing job of pulling together core skate and snow photographers and writers and letting them do what they want to do.

While most of the major label skate and snow magazines focus on the West Coast thing, Strength is way more tied into the New York art groove. This can be cool and/or annoying depending on what you think of the New York skate/art scene. Check out the people who've designed Strength T-shirts: Shepard Fairey (of Andre the Giant fame), Phil Frost (who painted live at the Original Sin booth in Las Vegas last year), Eli Gesner, and Jahmal Williams (who I wouldn't know from Jean-Michael Basquiat.

This issue features interviews with Mikey LeBlanc, Jay Nelson, Fu Manchu, Scott Johnston, and a huge story on Bay Area Hip-Hop. But that's not all. To read the rest, go buy the magazine bucko.
