[Squaw Valley USA] Squaw Valley is set to host the 2nd Annual California State Winter Games February 12-13, 2000. This amateur Olympic-style winter sports festival includes an Opening Ceremony, lighting of the torch, a fireworks show, and a variety of wither sports events.

Participants are expected from all over California to come and represent their home towns in the following events: alpine slalom & giant slalom races, snowboarding slalom & giant slalom races, snowboard half-pipe, and new this year, both skiercross and boardercross competitions. Two additional competitions, fencing and ice-hockey, are scheduled to take place in nearby Reno, NV.

A development program of the United States Olympic Committee, this multi-sport event aims to attract new interest and exposure as well as reach out to young adults and their families to showcase these dynamic winter sports. The California State Games is a unique statewide event, bringing many diverse elements of Californias population together to celebrate a common bond: amateur sports. One of the benefits of this event is that it plays a prominent role in education, drug awareness programs, sports medicine, coaching and much more.

The games are open to all amateur athletes ages 8 and up. Registration fees are $25 for one event and $20 for each additional event and gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the winners.
