The Peter Principle: Peter Line Makes Gold in Big Air:
X Games Day 2
6/26/99
By Lee Crane

Peter Line rolled into his first run at the X Games big air on Saturday, threw down a inverted 720 (ask him what he calls it) and scored a 95.33 which no one touched the rest of the day. The only guys who came close were Ben Hinkley with a double front flip on his first run, which announcer

Two engineering marvels: The Jump and the Bay Bridge.
Dave Duncan said was, "more of a ski-type maneuver," and Chris Engelsman's 90 roll stomped during his second run. They finished second and third.

In the women's competition Barrett Christy consistently landed a trick everyone was calling a Barrett Roll. Barrett apparently doesn't like hearing her name in on the trick so she was telling people that is just a switch, front-flip 180. Well, it was just enough to land her some X Games gold.

X fans began lining up outside the front gates of Pier 30-32 at 9 AM on Saturday morning so they could get good seats for the Snowboard Big Air. When the gates finally opened at 10:30 the crowd stormed directly to the snowboard big air jump where 10 men and 5 women were practicing for the finals that started at noon.

Chris Engelsman a few problems on during practice, but no one had problems like Mike Biello. First

Peter Line has more style in his little finger than. . .
practice run he did a pretty big front flip, landed it, and then while slowing down caught an edge and dislocated his shoulder. While medics were icing and wrapping his arm he didn't seem too concerned. "It was just like Lethal Weapon," he said. "I just caught my toe side edge put my arms out and it popped right out."

The crowd was stoked on Peter Line's first jump, however, they went completely crazy when Ben Hinkley pulled out the double front. In fact, many of them booed when his score went up on the board and they saw that he hadn't beaten Peter's score.

Defending scaffold jumping champion Kevin Jones pulled out the old money making frontside 900 in the first run and the Chicane twice, but couldn't stick the landing on the last two. Jones wasn't the only one. Nearly everyone had trouble with their landings. "The jump was a little small for what everyone was doing," Kevin Jones said "So everyone was flying way into the landing."

Ben Hinkley's double front was the crowd favorite.

Mike Biello made it two for two on the dislocation meter when he dropped in the first run and went for the rain maker with a double back. He landed on his arms and presto pop-o the arm jumped right out of his shoulder for a second time. It may not feel very good, but it could help him escape from the a straightjacket if the need should ever arise.

In the second run Kendall Whelpton went for the backside Rodeo seven but couldn't stick it. Kevin Sansalone got the board around for a 90 roll, and Hinkley performed a smooth Rippey flip late 180 to slam. Mikey Basich went for the double back flip on his third run but got way back on his hands

in the landing.

After three runs no one got with in five points of Peter and he walked with the gold. It was good to see a competition when the winner was so definitely the boss.

In the women's competition the crowd took a little break in the race between Tina Dixon's tailgrab threes and Christy's Barrett Rolls to sing Happy Birthday to Morgan LaFonte who was celebrating her birthday. Unfortunately, the singing didn't help her land her double backflip though she get sack of the day awards for every trying it.

The huge San Francisco crowd coupled with perfect weather on the bay made this the best Summer X Games big air yet.
