Chatfield and MacLeod Win OBE's Bud Light Big Air Finals
By Shanti Sosienski
| Jason Chatfield's big dollar air netted him a solid 10,000 at Saturday's
O.B.E. big air finals. |
The morning started with a blizzard and ended a golden day at the Bud
Light OBE Big Air Finals at Mt. Hood Meadows, April 25, 1998. Jason
Chatfield won the men's event and Jaime MacLeod finally tasted victory
for the women.
The final OBE event, sponsored by Bud Light, K2 Clickers, Planet Earth,
Zumiez Snowboard Shop, and SOL | Snowboarding Online featured Pennywise as the headlining band and a top-notch group of big air
finalists from this season's tour. The jump, built by the big air specialists Stimilon, was measured at two Mahaffey's

(after big air specialist Joel Mahaffey) and had one of the steepest take offs and landings that riders had seen. There was a moment of concern voiced by riders as they looked at the jump, however, it ended up being one of the best of the year.
The Big Air was spectacular. Since this was the last event of the year
most riders hucked harder than they had all season throwing down a solid
mix that included switch front flip cartwheels and switch 900s.
Peter Line rode stronger than he has in months. The east coast was in serious represent mode with Rich Nessover, Myles Hallen, Nick Francke, and Lauren Naudascher showing Oregonians how the Easties do it.
Jaime MacLeod was solid and smooth, attempting and nearly nabbing a 720 after the contest was over. Rippey pulled his Rip Flip, but didn't quite make the finals. Borgstede was riding on major injuries after a super session in So Cal wrecked him last week.

Pennywise was the final act of the day and had the
crowd raging.
The "no snowball" rule lasted throughout the show, but Pennywise taunted the audience
causing a major snowball fight in the end.
What Pennywise did get during the
show from their taunts was girls flashing a little bit of padded bra,
which undoubtedly must have
pleased the 5,000 plus people packed into the audience. What they also got by the end of the snowball
fight was 6,000 dollars worth of damage to their equipment, but as Byron McMackin, the drummer of Pennywise said,
"What the hell, the event was a fucking blast, it was worth it."
