LAUREN HOFFMAN - MEGIDDO (VIRGIN)
Release date: 5/20/97
Review: Angel Bennett

Lauren Hoffman is cool. She's pretty, she's nineteen, and she can play guitar. On the single, "Rock Star," her voice flirts with the dark side as she sings about Cobain idolatry ("I want to hold your kid and make love to your wife") but her buzzing guitar buoys the tone. It's PJ Harvey only better. She swings from soothing to sly with the ease of an eyelash floating to the ground thanks in part to the elegant production by fellow Virginians David Lowery (Cracker, Sparklehorse) and John Morand. In addition to gracefully spotlighting Hoffman's clever lyrics and meandering melodies, they lent a hand in playing on some of the tracks. Megiddo is a stunning debut.
